Who Switched On Blackpool Illuminations
In 1934 Blackpool Council started the tradition of getting a famous figure of the day to switch on the Blackpool Illuminations with a ceremony to mark the start of the illuminations season, Lord Derby was the first to perform the switch on ceremony.
This tradition has continued, with the exception of the war years, to this day and much excitement and anticipation is generated around which celebrity will be performing the switch on ceremony.
The Blackpool Illuminations 2023 will run for 123 days. From Friday 1st September 2023 untill Monday 1st January 2024.
The celebrity switching on the lights is traditionaly announced shortly before the switch on date. The switch on date for 2023 is Friday September 1st.
The switch on ceremony over the years has been performed by the folowing:

- 2021 Shirley Ballas (Strictly Come Dancing Head Judge)

- 2017 Diversity (dance troupe) assisted by Star Trek’s Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs)
